Relationship between body image and risk of developing eating disorders in ballet adolescents
Abstract
Adolescence is a stage of life characterized by major physical, emotional, and social changes. It is during this phase that the most apparent transformations occur in the body and body image becomes a key factor for social and personal development. Based on this, the study sought to verify the relationship between body image and risk of developing eating disorders in ballet adolescents. This is a cross-sectional study, in which adolescents from a Guarapuava-PR college, practicing and not practicing ballet. The adolescents answered two questionnaires: dietary attitudes test (EAT) to identify the presence of eating disorders and the body image questionnaire (BSQ) to assess levels of dissatisfaction with body image. Of the adolescents participating in this study, all adolescents presented distortion of body image, where more than 50% of adolescents practicing and not practicing ballet presented a risk for the development of eating disorders. The data evidenced the importance of the subject for the health of these adolescents, intervention measures are necessary with the students in an attempt to assist them in a better acceptance of their body.
