Influence of previous intake of carbohydrates with high and low glycemic index on the aerobic potential of street runners
Abstract
Carbohydrates are molecules and the primary function is to provide energy. Among the formats, which are presented, such as the powder for the preparation of drinks are among the bestselling. Considering that carbohydrate supplements have been widely used among riders, this study aimed to evaluate the influence of previous ingestion of maltodextrin and isomaltulose on the blood glucose and aerobic potential of street runners. For this study, 12 healthy male subjects aged 22-38 years (27 ± 4.69), Body Mass Index (BMI) from 18.30 to 23.86 kg/m2 (21.46 ± 1, 76) and with fat percentage between 4.1 and 19.6% (8.4 ± 4.28). The participants (divided into two groups) previously ingested a carbohydrate solution with maltodextrin or isomaltulose on the first day and placebo on the second day. Their blood glucose levels were measured fasting after drinking and after exercise. The stress test used was that of Luc Léger, which consists of an aerobic protocol of easy execution with 21 stages and progressive difficulty. Although there were different changes in blood glucose for the three drinks ingested, no significant differences were observed for mean values of VO2max. It was concluded that the consumption of beverages with different types of carbohydrates (high and low glycemic index), 20 minutes before a cardiorespiratory teste, is not able to positively alter the aerobic potential of street runners.
