Abstract

The consumption of biological compounds has been associated with the reduction of oxidative stress, maintenance of muscular recovery and maintenance of energy, thus increasing ergogenesis during intensive exercises. Vegetables contain phytochemicals that confer reduction of oxidative stress, improve sports performance, increase strength and endurance. The pumpkin (Cucurbita moschata) has received considerable attention in recent years due to the nutrition and health benefits attributed to bioactive compounds obtained from its fruit. This is an experimental study conducted with 14 Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus). The animals were divided into two groups, a control group (CG, n = 6) receiving distilled water, and an experimental group (GE, n = 8), who received the ethanolic extract of the pumpkin (250mg / kg) by gavage during 21 days. The anti-fatigue effect and performance were assessed by means of exhaustive swimming exercise, as well as plasma lactate and glucose levels. At the end of the experiment, the animals were submitted to euthanasia, blood collection and removal of the liver. There was no significant difference between the groups in relation to the time of exhaustion and biochemical parameters evaluated. The consumption of the extract did not cause liver damage and had no impact on the body mass of the animals. Further studies with longer treatment times are needed to better define pumpkin ergogenesis in reducing fatigue and improving physical performance.
