Influence of water loss on strength of university basketball athletes
Abstract
Introduction: Basketball is a sport that requires intense movement, which generates a water loss process that can lead to changes in performance. Objective: To analyze the influence of water loss on hand and explosive strength variables in athletes of a male college basketball team. Materials and Methods: The sample consisted of 11 athletes with an average age of 23.18 ± 3.45 years and average height of 1.86 ± 0.05m. The athletes underwent horizontal jump (cm) and handgrip (kgf) tests before and after each match during two friendlies. Air temperature and humidity were also verified, as well as water loss (mL) verified through body weight (kg) before and after each match, water consumption (mL) and the time of each athlete in court in minutes. For the inferential analysis we used the t test for paired samples and Spearman correlation, with a significance level of 5%. Results and discussion: Body weight showed a significant decrease in both friendlies (p <0.05). Significant correlation was found between time on court and water loss during the first friendly match, while time on court explains the water loss in 46.3%, and in the second friendly match a significant difference in hand grip strength was identified. right (p = 0.015). Conclusion: There was a significant water loss, the effect of this water loss on the strength variables was only significant in a friendly, regarding manual strength.
