Abstract
Introduction: People who practice physical activity look for a more muscular body with a low fat percentage. As a result, they can opt for fad diets to achieve their goals. Objective: To evaluate the frequency of fad diets among adult bodybuilders at a gym in Canela-RS. Materials and methods: Cross-sectional study including 45 adult bodybuilders from a gym in Canela (RS), from July to September 2023.Data collection was carried out through a self-administered questionnaire with questions about sociodemographic, anthropometric, and physical activity, food consumption and their experiences with fad diets. Results: The majority of the sample (53.3%) has already followed a fad diet, the most common being low carb (28.9%), followed by intermittent fasting (20%), detox (13.3%), diet for hypertrophy (4.4%) and Dukan (2.2%). Among the group that had already been on a diet, the majority (20%) lasted for a very short period (less than a month) and 93.3% of the sample were unsuccessful with the diets. Conclusion: More than half of the study sample has already followed a fad diet, with low carb being the most prevalent, although followed for a short period of time.
