Knowledge about food supplements between physical exercise practitioners
Abstract
In search of the perfect body or even for other health benefits, there is an exaggeration in consumer products marketed as dietary supplements. The promise of faster results in muscle mass, body definition, fat reduction and weight, metabolism acceleration has contributed to the use of these substances. This study evaluated the knowledge of practitioners of physical exercise on the concept and use of dietary supplements. We conducted a cross-sectional study whose participants were practitioners of physical exercise gyms in Caxias do Sul-RS. A questionnaire with open and closed multiple choice questions on the concept and use of supplements was built. The sample consisted of 104 bodybuilders, averaging 27.8 ± age of 8.4 years, and 51.4% were male. Among them, 92.3% answered to know the meaning of the concept of supplements and 66.3% indicated this concept correctly. Most, 58.6% answered using food supplement, highlighting the protein and carbohydrates. Hypertrophy (57.4%) was the main objective in the use of supplements and 55.7% the indication was performed by physical educator, however, 90.2% of them believe it is the nutritionist who should prescribe. The main body alterations were observed using the power gain (55.7%) and hypertrophy (54.1%). In the majority's view (87.5%) is the nutritionist who should prescribe dietary supplements. The exercise practitioners know the concept of dietary supplements, make the use and highlight the currently registered dietitian enabled for your prescription.
