Suplementos que contienen DMAA: Mitos y Verdades

Resumen

La 1,3-dimetilamilamina (DMAA) es una amina alifática de cadena lineal que tiene propiedades simpaticomiméticas y ha estado presente en una amplia variedad de suplementos dietéticos para mejorar la pérdida de peso y el rendimiento físico. Los suplementos que contienen este ingrediente han sido objeto de extensas investigaciones debido a la gran divergencia de información encontrada en la literatura, tales como: controversias en cuanto a su origen, ya sea natural o no, y la asociación de este ingrediente con casos de efectos adversos graves para la salud. que en conjunto dieron como resultado la prohibición de su comercialización. Una revisión de la literatura sobre los efectos de DMAA dio como resultado: diecisiete estudios que asocian efectos adversos para la salud y 16 estudios clínicos sobre dosis de DMAA solo, en combinación o como ingrediente en suplementos en condiciones más controladas. De hecho, toda la discusión en torno al DMAA no resulta en etiquetarlo como dañino o seguro, ya que, por un lado, la mayoría de los efectos adversos presentados ocurrieron en ambientes no controlados, estando asociados a varios factores como: alto y/o desconocido dosis, asociación con alcohol y/u otro tipo de drogas y actividad física extenuante. Por otro lado, la mayoría de los estudios clínicos desarrollados han sido realizados por un único grupo de investigación financiado por la propia empresa que fabrica estos productos. Por lo tanto, en un intento por aclarar dichos efectos asociados con DMAA, el objetivo de esta revisión fue abordar los efectos del uso agudo y crónico de diferentes dosis de DMAA solo o en combinación con otras sustancias.
