The L-Arginine supplementation does not reduce the arterial pressure after an acute session of resistance training
Abstract
Arterial hypertension is considered one of the most important risk factors for developing cardiovascular diseases. Changing life style and the regular physical activity are the main modifiable causes in the non pharmacological treatment of hypertension. The aim of this study was to verify L-arginine supplementation on the arterial pressure response after an acute session of resistance training. Materials and methods: Two hypertensive subjects participated in the study (Age: 30.5 ± 3.54 anos; Weight: 78.5 ± 4.95 Kg). The study was conducted in three different days with an interval of 48h. on the first experimental day the subjects underwent a strength test to determine the 1RM. An amount of 7g of L-arginine, divided in 12 capsules, was administered 3 times (7h, 12h e 17h) on the second day of exercises. The same model was used for placebo (starch) supplementation on the third day. Results: Except by the difference on basal systolic arterial pressure between placebo and L-arginine supplementation (140.75 ± 3.18 mmHg e 145 ± 3.54 mmHg, respectively; P=0.037), no other difference was found between treatments. Conclusion: L-arginine supplementation doesn’t lower arterial pressure after an acute session of resistance exercise.
