Evidence for the use of Waxy Maize in physical activities: a systematic review
Abstract
Carbohydrate is a fundamental nutrient for sports practice. As a major energy contributor to the diet, this nutrient is related to improved performance in several modalities, in consumption before, during or after training/exercise. Waxy Maize (waxy corn starch) has been used in physical activity due to its particular absorption characteristics, being a food with a high glycemic index, with less capacity to raise blood glucose and insulin. Thus, the aim of this review was to investigate the possible effects of Waxy Maize consumption in exercise practitioners in the current scientific literature. The protocol of this study was conducted under the Main Items for Reporting Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Works in Pubmed and SciElo databases published up to January 2020 were searched. Three articles were selected through the search methodology and two articles through other alternative means, all with crossover protocols. When compared to other carbohydrates, the intake of Waxy Maize has lower blood glucose and insulin peaks at rest immediately after consumption. It is possible that the consumption of Waxy Maize before training favors performance, generating lower glycemic peaks, thus minimizing the risk of rebound hypoglycemia. Its use appears to have little applicability in recovery after exercise. It is notorious that studies containing Waxy Maize as the main carbohydrate source are scarce and not very enlightening, requiring more evidence to establish safe recommendations, although it can be used as an alternative source of carbohydrates in the practice of physical activity.
