Analysis of sports drinks prepared from commercial maltodextrins and their suitability with the sports nutrition guidelines
Abstract
Maltodextrins solutions are a way to offer carbohydrates, electrolytes and hydrate athletes during endurance and intermittent exercises. However, the incorrect preparation of these solutions can cause gastrointestinal disorders and impair sports performance. The aim of this study was to investigate the instructions of preparation and the nutritional information on the labels of commercial maltodextrins. Were analyzed by convenience 19 maltodextrins brands with respect to: a) concentration of carbohydrates and sodium of the final product prepared in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendation; b) The indication of use (before, during and after exercise). Of the 19 brands, 17 presented as a final product solutions with high concentrations of carbohydrates, and 12 indicated consumption during exercise. Only one product discriminate different dilutions on the moment of use. The average concentration of carbohydrate of the product was 16.88 %. No product has the correct amount of sodium for consumption during physical activity. Therefore, according to this study, the preparation of maltodextrin solutions from the most preparation instructions from the products investigated, generates inadequate drink for consumption during exercise.
