Soccer and Macronutrients
Abstract
A balanced diet, plenty of carbohydrates, proteins and fats is fundamental to provide the nutritional needs, improve soccer players’ performance and recovery after training. A proper intake of nutrients is one of the responsible factors for performance improvement. This study aims at systematically reviewing the consumption of macronutrients (carbohydrates, proteins and lipids) by male professional soccer players and comparing it with the current recommendations for this modality. Thirty-eight articles, published in the period from 1994 to 2009, and collected from database, were analyzed. Working from this corpus, it was perceived that most of athletes do not have a proper consumption of macronutrients. With regard to the intake of carbohydrates, 100% of the players consume smaller quantity than the advisable (minimum of 60% of the total calorie value). The hyperproteic diet (> 15% of the total calorie value) prevails among 80% of the players; the high intake of lipids (> 30% of the total calorie value) reaches 61.5%. Taking into consideration that Nutrition is one of the keys to good physical performance of a player, professionals responsible for preparing athletes should pay more attention to dietary habits of their players.
