Comparative study between two body coomposition assessment protocols: relative amount of mass and adipose mass
Abstract
In the literature there are two great ways of analyzing the body composition, the chemical and the anatomical method, and some divergences about it. The objective of the present study was to compare two standardizations of anthropometric measurements. The Petroski protocol (1995) combined with the Brozek equation (1963) and the tissue analysis method of Ross and Kerr (1991) developed through cadaver studies. Nineteen (10 male and 9 female) undergraduates between the ages of 20 and 30 enrolled in the physical education course of the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Ceará - Campus Canindé participated in this study. Data collection was performed by a single experienced anthropometrist. The sample was considered normal by the Shapiro-Wilk normality test, the descriptive and inferential statistics were used by t test (p≤0,05). There was a significant difference in the adipose mass of the Petroski women; Ross and Kerr are respectively 13.22 ± 2.94 kg; 20.49 ± 3.66 kg. Likewise, the men presented values of fat mass of 10.24 ± 5.16 kg; 16.25 ± 4.61 kg. Regarding the values of muscle mass obtained from women, respectively, 29.35 ± 2.71 kg; 24.73 ± 2.80 kg. However, there was no difference in the muscle mass of the men 33.19 ± 4.22 kg; 32.03 ± 7.02 kg. The results show that there is a difference between the methods of body composition evaluation in university students. The mean value of muscle mass of men did not present significant difference. We suggest new studies that seek to compare these two methods.
