Nitrate supplementation in performance during high intensity intermittent exercise: a literature review
Português (Brasil)
Abstract
Introduction: Nitrate supplementation (NO3-) has been shown to be effective in improving the performance of medium and long-term exercise, in addition to positively altering the performance of high-intensity exercise. However, little is known about the effects of supplementation on high-intensity intermittent exercise. Objective: to explore the effects of NO3- supplementation on the performance of high-intensity intermittent exercise, discussing the mechanisms and evidence already existing in the literature related to this type of exercise. Materials and methods: a search was performed in the Pubmed database and the PICOS strategy was defined for a more specific search and selection of eligible articles, being (P) healthy adults and elderly, physically active or not; (I) nitrate supplementation in the high intensity intermittent exercise; (C) control or crossover group; (O) Effect on exercise performance; resistance improvement; strength improvement; improvement in oxygen consumption; (S) experimental studies. Results: Of the 19 articles found, 15 articles were selected by title and abstract, 6 articles were excluded after reading and remaining 9 articles eligible for full reading and evaluation by the PICOS strategy. In the end, 9 articles were part of this review. Discussion: it was highlighted that (NO3-) supplementation has positive effects on the performance of high-intensity intermittent exercises, improving oxygen consumption and utilization, increasing strength and power levels, decreasing muscle pH and lactate. Conclusion: NO3- supplementation has positive effects on high-intensity intermittent exercise performance.
